Thursday Afternoon Business - Demonstration
During the presentation by the General Conference
delegation, the slow pounding of a drum signaled a break in the report for
an otherwise silent protest. Many persons came down the center aisle, went
across the front of the chapel, and returned up the sides. Several persons
carried two coffins. This was a protest against the supposed unity found at
General Conference, in a time when many issues remain unresolved and highly
contested -- among them, the issues of homosexuality and United Methodist
clergy. At the end of the brief demonstration, the two coffins, covered with
banners bearing the word ""Peace" remained at the front of the chapel, just
before the worship center. (see photo) |
