UM Bishop Wires Around Discipline, Keeps Openly Homosexual Gay Pastor In Pulpit
Gay Pastor Stays At Church -- For Now
June 28, 2001
The Rev. Mark Williams:
'A Temporary Fix'
...SEATTLE - A homosexual Methodist minister will be allowed to remain at his church but will function under the direction of an interim pastor [His District Superintendent Rev. Bob Hoshibata], a church official said Thursday.
...The Rev. Mark Williams, who announced June 15 that he's gay, must wait until an October meeting of the United Methodist church judicial council to learn whether he will be reinstated as pastor.
...Bishop Galvan said Williams remains in good standing with the church and continue to draw the same salary. But he cannot perform as pastor because the church prohibits homosexuals from serving as members of the clergy.
...Williams' congregation has declared its full support for keeping him as their minister.
