Confessing Movement Cries Out in Intercession for the UMC

CM Prayer Alert...October 27, 1998

"O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's house, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses." Nehemiah 1:5-7(NIV)

Praise God!

Let us join together in seeking God's will, and fasting and praying for . . .

  • The United Methodist Church. Let us repent for the UMC as Nehemiah did for the Israelites, asking forgiveness for those who have walked away from the authority of God's Word and the Truth that is Jesus Christ in favor of something the world finds more palitable, for our women's events that pursue witchcraft spirituality and promote worship of the "goddess Sophia", for our Board of Global Ministries, that they would even consider abandoning Christian conversion as a Mission in favor of a more inclusive "ministry", for our clergy that seek to bless and accept what God has called sin rather that show us how to turn away and seek His righteousness, for all of us who find it easier to hate the sinner along with the sin and so miss God's calling to join Him as He is at work in the world. Confess our denomination's sins, confess your own, and ask God to bring us out of the Darkness of the world and into the Light of Christ's Kingdom.

  • The Judicial Council, meeting October 28-30. It will decide whether or not the statement "Ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions shall not be conducted by our ministers and shall not be conducted in our churches" is unconstitutional, and therefore invalid. Individual members are: Tom H. Matheny, president, Rev. John G. Corry, vice president, Sally Curtis-AsKew, secretary, Rev. Susan Henry-Crowe [Reconciling Church Program member], Rev. Charles Rex Bevins, Rev. Zan W. Holmes, Jr., Evelynn S. Caterson, Wesley Bailey, and Rev. Theodore H. Walter. Pray that the Holy Spirit will guide them in all their decisions and that God's will be done.

  • The California-Nevada Conference and the group of over 60 clergy planning to participate as co-officiants at a covenant service early next year between a female conference lay leader and a female conference trustee. This group continues to grow as "Cornet" invites all clergy to participatein this demonstration of mass disobedience, even in absentia.

  • The Northern Illinois Conference and thier Bishop, Joseph Sprague. Sprague has brought charges against Rev. Gregory Dell for performing a covenant ceramony between two men. As a candidate for bishop of northern Illinois in 1996, Sprague promised two things: He would advocate for a church that welcomed and blessed gays and lesbians; and he would uphold church law, even if it conflicted with his beliefs on that issue.

  • Please continue to pray for Rev. Kent L. Svendsen, the Northern coordinator of the Confessing Movement Association there. The CM faces stiff resistance from practically all of the leadership within the conference. Many people in the churches are discouraged and feel helpless. Pray that the Lord would send workers, district coordinators, church coordinator, and that the Holy Spirit would push the battle fatigued closet evangelicals off the fence.

  • All of our UM Bishops, believers and non-believers alike, as God is at work in them and through them, bringing the Methodist Church back to faith in Jesus Christ: God, Savior, and Lord.

  • Jim Gentile, who is meeting with local Methodist pastors in the Virginia Beach area and will be videotaped for a production featuring pro-gay and ex-gay persons. Please continue to lift him up in prayer. Many do not want to hear what he has to say. [all personal prayer request have been removed to maintain confidentiality]

  • Please continue to pray for. . . The Confessing Movement, as we confess Jesus Christ as Son, Savior, and Lord, seek to enable the UMC to retrieve its classical doctrinal identity, and strive to live out our lives as true disciples of Jesus Christ.

Continued prayer requests will remain in the Prayer Alert for about 1 month unless I receive an update. If you have an update on any of our continued prayer requests, or a new prayer request, send it to me at:
