Bishop May Allow for New UMC Church in Omaha
(Omaha) Nebraska United Methodist Bishop Joel Martinez has moved swiftly on a request by a group of parishioners from Omaha's First United Methodist Church to organize a new congregation.
Maritnez said in a statement Friday that he had asked the Rev. Ronald Croom, the incoming Omaha district superintendent, "to work with this request."
Martinez said his Cabinet and appropriate committees at the district and state levels will also need to be involved. He said the procedures for organizing a new congregation in the denominations's Book of Order (Book of Discipline, my correction) will be followed.
Mel Semrad, a spokesman for the breakaway group, said he called Martinez on Thursday and was "very pleased" with the conversation. He said he would be contacting Croom as well.
