Bishop Blake's response to Dammann verdict
As you may be aware, last week a verdict of not guilty was given in a church clergy trial of the Rev. Karen Dammann, a United Methodist minister in the state of Washington who was charged with practices declared by the United Methodist Church to be incompatible with Christian teachings.
If anyone consults you concerning the significance of the Dammann verdict, you might share with them this response from Bishop Blake:
"The verdict in the Dammann case applies only to the Dammann case. The only case law we have in the United Methodist Church are the rulings of the United Methodist Judicial Council, the supreme court of our denomination. Every Judicial Council ruling has stated that the section of the United Methodist Book of Discipline that forbids the ordination of homosexuals is consistent with the Constitution of the United Methodist Church."
