Board of Marietta First United Methodist
Votes to Direct Apportionments

TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 1998

The Board of Stewards of the First United Methodist Church, Marietta, Georgia, voted on March 22 to pay $177,517.87 of its apportionments as requested and to redirect $58,427.13 to other official United Methodist ministries beyond the local church.

On January 25, 1998, the Board had voted to temporarily withhold payment of apportionments pending an investigation by an appointed committee. The investigation by the committee focused on "the doctrinal integrity of The United Methodist Church." The committee submitted a detailed report to the Board which documented instances of unfaithfulness to the apostolic faith and the denomination’s Doctrinal Standards, and to church law and discipline.

Based on these findings, the Board elected to redirect $58,427.13 of the apportionments which represents the amount that was to have been paid to the following funds: Episcopal Fund, General Administration Fund, World Service Fund, Ministerial Education Fund and Interdenominational Cooperation Fund. The redirected funds will be given to the Wesley Foundation Building Fund at the University of Georgia, the Camp Glisson Redevelopment Program and Mountain Top Boys Home.
