Fassett Asked to Resign by Church Members

Press Release - Don Thompson

Date: 3-15-1998

Lay persons ask Thom White Wolf Fassett to resign.

Today following an address to members of Christ UMC Memphis, TN Thom White Wolf Fassett was asked to resign as General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society. In a written letter, read aloud by one of the 6 signers, Don Thompson, stated, "We, the undersigned, are asking you to resign immediately as the General Secretary of the UM General Board of Church and Society." The action was taken because of Fassett's involvement in a letter that was sent to the Congress on April 29, 1996, encouraging Congress to not outlaw a brutal late term abortion technique called Partial Birth Abortion.

God's law says, " Thou shall not murder" Exodus 20:13. God has told us in Proverbs 24:11, "Rescue those being led away to death." The Discipline statement on abortion affirms the "sanctity of unborn human life." By signing the letter to Congress, Fassett is not helping to save life but to destroy life, therefore his actions are in conflict with the Discipline.

Upon receiving the letter Fassett casually tossed it on to a chair. He explained that the UMC is Pro-Choice and his actions were consistent with that of the Church.

The reason for Fassett's visit to Christ Church Memphis was to meet with the apportionment committee. The committee has been studying whether Christ Church should withhold part or all of it $760,000.00 annual apportionment.

"If Fassett does not resign we are looking into a Church trial," said Thompson. "I have already talked to the District Superintendent."

[Text of Letter]

Dear Dr. Thom White Wolf Fassett,

First of all let me say that God loves you. I know that God loves you because he sent His beloved Son Jesus into the world to die on a cross to pay for the sins that you and I have committed. If we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we will be saved. The fact that God came to earth in the form of a man, and then would give up His life so that you and I could be saved is the ultimate act of unconditional love. Praise be to God. God loves you.

God loves His creation so much that He is willing to allow His beloved Son to take the punishment that you and I deserve. God wants us to express our love for Him through our obedience to His commandments. God has told us in Proverbs 24:11

"Rescue those being led away to death;
hold back those staggering toward slaughter.
If you say, ' but we knew nothing about this,'
does not He who weighs the heart perceive it?
Will He not repay each person according to what he has done?"

Almighty God has commanded you and me to rescue people being led away to death!

On April 10, 1996, President Clinton vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have made it illegal to perform a partial birth abortion (except to save the life of the mother). A partial birth abortion is a late-term abortion procedure that involves delivering the legs, arms, and trunk of an unborn child. Then while the child's head remains inside, a pair of surgical scissors is used to puncture the child's skull; using a suction device the child's brain is sucked out until the skull collapses: and then finally the full body of lifeless baby is pulled from the mother.

Clearly this baby was led away to death and the mother staggered towards the slaughter of her child.

In a letter date April 29, 1996, you and your cosigners wrote, "As mainstream religious leaders, we write to express our agreement with President Clinton's veto of HR 1833, the so-called 'Partial Birth Abortion Ban,' and urge Congress not to override that veto."

A majority of Republican and Democratic leaders found partial birth abortion repugnant enough to write a law to ban it. This law would have put an end to this grotesque form of child abuse and slaughter. However you chose to agree with the President, go against the will of Congress and the American people and support this form of murder.

God states in the Bible that, " Thou shall not murder" Exodus 20:13. God has told us in Proverbs 24:11 " Rescue those being led away to death". Jesus says, "Do not murder" Matthew 19:18. " All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness..." 2 Timothy 3:16

The action that you took by signing this enclosed letter has gone against God's word and is immoral.

God's word says in 1 Corinthians 5:9,12-13, "I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with immoral men;....... For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside......."

We, the under signed, are asking you to resign immediately as the General Secretary of the UM General Board of Church and Society.
