Bishop Gavan is wrong. Karen is not an elder in good standing if she is violating the Discipline and is a self avowed practicing homosexual.
As the Bishop states, the Church will be preserved for all time by God. However, as I read Revelation and the Word of the resurrected Jesus speaking to the seven churches (and thus to us) through John, He determines the churches existence and warns that without adherence to His standards he will "remove their candlestick." No individual congregation or denomination is promised eternal, or time lasting, existence as a part of His church, even though it may continue for some time as a club or organization doing humanity some good.
It appears that here the Bishop feels the pain of this "Elder in good standing", but does he feel the pain of the Church and it's many members who are harmed by her blatant disregard and defiance of the Discipline of our Church. There is much talk about unit. Need we be reminded that the thing that unites us is our common covenant, the Discipline of the Church. Those who forsake our Discipline have broken their Covenant with us. They are the destroyers of our unity. If this "Elder" would realize the Jesus calls on His Disciples to deny themselves, take up a cross and follow Him, surely she would know that accepting the call and taking the vow of an Elder requires the sacrifice of ourselves. In light of this, why must she insist on having it her way. Let her go her way, but we can not walk with here, she has broken her vow and covenant. She is no longer an Elder in good standing, she is not longer an Elder at all.
From one who has kept his covenant and vows and great cost.
Praise the Lord! I'm glad we have some bishops with the intestinal fortitude to uphold the Discipline and the Word of God!
