I wanted to send a quick report on our Evangelical Renewal Fellowship meeting held today in Modesto. We had over 150 people present! I received over 70 letters of support, many of which I read during the meeting. Also many notes were forwarded to the group ahead of time on email.
Kent and Linda Barnard of First UMC Bakersfield, lead us in very spiritual 30 minutes of worship. Then Judy Robbins, pastor of Arbuckle and Knights Landing spoke. She told about growing up in a UMC devoid of spirituality. Then she discovered a Christian youth group at an evangelical UMC. She shared her disappointment in the trends in our conference. Referring to the Lord's message to Elijah that 7,000 had not bowed the knee to Baal, she encouraged us to 1) guard ourselves from treating others with whom we disagree in an unrighteous manner, 2) continue to teach the truth of scripture and 3) pray.
We then used some materials from the Confessing Movement concert of prayer in Indianapolis last September. In three movements, Confession, Waiting and Hoping and Assurance and Commitment, there was time for corporate prayer, scripture and group prayer. Kent and Linda continued to lead music between the segments.
In the afternoon, we presented the United Methodist Missionary Conference for the Western Jurisdiction. Kyle Phillips, pastor at Tehachapi, presented the letter that six pastors signed asking for redirection of apportionments. He said the UMC house had a fire in the rear and smoke was coming out the front door. He challenged those present to make the church see the smoke.
At the conclusion those going to General Conference gathered together in the front of the sanctuary while the others surrounded them and lifted them up in prayer. ERF will be sending a team of six to lobby for the Missionary Conference. Others are going for prayer support.
We took an offering for our General Conference expenses. Imagine my surprise when I got home and counted the offering. It came to $1,989.01. What a joy!
It was a great day. Thanks for all the prayer support many of you provided.
