Subject: Update on Tehachapi and Atwater

Hi, John,

Kyle Phillips of Techachapi has moved out of the parsonage and is rejoicing in the strength of the Lord. He writes:

"Blessings to you all. Grace Fellowship is the new name for 80% of what used to be Tehachapi Valley UMC. Our first morning service met at the Veteran's Memorial Hall in Tehachapi this Sunday. We had 166 in attendance. Following worship we gathered at a pool where we baptized 4 new believers. The separation has provided a powerful opportunity for us to ponder deeply what it means to follow Jesus and to be the church together."

FYI, the Conference seems determined to maintain the 40 people left at TVUMC although they will have trouble finding a facility since they were unable to retain the leased building they had been using. They currently have a retired pastor filling in and will have difficulty getting a new pastor.

John Motz reports that 400 people came to worship last Sunday in Atwater. The DS was there to receive his UM orders after the service. He expects 25-40 people to maintain Atwater UMC with the rest looking for a new facility to borrow or rent in two weeks. John is being allowed to preach his last sermon this Sunday, July 23rd. John, Laurie and the boys are in the process of moving out of the parsonage as well. He reports that spirits are very high and joyful as they leave their facility to form Atwater Community Church. The only regrets are those who have not attended church in five years or who have transferred to other churches now coming back to take over the facility.

Keep in touch. I don't think they have finished leaving, yet.
