A recap of the latest news for California-Pacific Annual Conference United Methodists....

"HOLY UNION" PRAYER VIGIL -- Hollywood United Methodist Church has issued an invitation for clergy and laity of churches and synagogues in the California-Pacific Conference area to gather January 16 to show their support for the planned "Holy Union" of two women who will be sharing vows at a service at the Sacramento Convention Center. The "service of solidarity" is scheduled to begin at noon, and will conclude with the ringing of the Hollywood UMC carillon at 1 p.m., marking the hour when the Sacramento service is scheduled to begin. A prayer vigil is planned following the ringing of the carillon.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND -- In case you haven't been paying attention, the two women -- Ellie Charlton and Jeanne Barnett -- are both active lay women in the California-Nevada Conference. The pair plan to celebrate their "committed relationship" with more than 80 clergy officiating at the service. Needless to say, the clergy who officiate could face charges for disobeying the "order and Discipline of the United Methodist Church." A Hollywood UMC spokesperson said many actions are planned across the nation to coincide with the Sacramento service, "as witness for the importance of ministries that celebrate the loving and committed relations of all people, and to protest the position of the United Methodist church prohibiting clergy and local churches from celebrating homosexual unions." So...once again the line is drawn in the sand. Stay tuned, we'll let you know what happens....
