UM Bishop Praises Anti-Christian Speaker For Taking Heretical Position
JESUS SEMINAR from American Family Radio News - Daily Delivery Edition For Tuesday, February 23, 1999 ( 9:30 a.m. central).
An academic who dismisses the stories of Jesus' miracles and divinity as myth and lore was recently given a warm welcome at a United Methodist seminary. Marcos Borg is a fellow of the controversial Jesus Seminar. He told an audience at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver that the Bible is a human product and ascribing it to divine inspiration leads to mass confusion. He says his own spiritual development has rejected supernatural theism in favor of pantheism. He says pantheism recognizes that we and everything that is are in God.
According to Borg, God does not care whether we are Christian, Muslim or Buddhist, saying there is no divine requirement to be Christian. According to Mark Tooley of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, Borg was introduced to the seminary audience by Methodist Bishop Mary Ann Swenson. She praised Borg as a man who has risked all in order to bridge the gap between academia and church pew. She called his presence a blessing. Iliff Seminary is one of 13 official United Methodist seminaries and receives about one million dollars a year from the denomination.
